When Data Meets Purpose — A Day I Won't Forget

Dr. Mohnish Kumar  ·  Assistant Professor, Faculty of Management  ·  Invertis University  ·  16th March 2026

I have delivered lectures, conducted sessions, and stood in front of classrooms more times than I can count. But every once in a while, there comes a day that reminds you exactly why you chose this profession. March 16th, 2026 was one of those days.

Before It All Began

The morning started early — earlier than most. As I walked into Seminar Hall 2, the chairs were being arranged, laptops were being set up, and a quiet kind of anticipation was already filling the room. My colleagues Dr. Manmohan Bansal and Dr. Prabhat Sharma were already there, running through the plan one last time. That collaborative energy between us — three people united by a shared belief in what this workshop could do for our students — is something I will carry with me for a long time.

We had designed this workshop not as a lecture, but as an experience. The goal wasn't to talk at students about data analytics — it was to put data in their hands and watch them figure it out.

"A good teacher doesn't just fill a student's mind with information. A great teacher ignites the curiosity to go find it themselves."

The Moment the Room Came Alive

When the students walked in at 9:30 AM, I noticed something immediately — they weren't dragging their feet. They were curious. Some were already talking about what they expected to learn. A few had done a bit of reading on their own. That, to me, is the best sign a teacher can receive before a session even begins.

As we moved through the workshop — from understanding raw data, to cleaning it, to visualising it, to writing reports that actually tell a story — I kept watching their faces. There's a very specific expression students get when something truly clicks. Their eyes sharpen. They lean forward slightly. They stop taking notes and start actually thinking. I saw that expression again and again throughout the day, and every time I did, I felt that quiet satisfaction that no job title or accolade can replicate.

What Students Explored in the Workshop

  • Understanding data types and structuring raw datasets for analysis
  • Techniques for data cleaning and removing inconsistencies
  • Visual storytelling — turning numbers into charts that communicate
  • Professional report writing — structure, tone, and impact
  • Real-world business case studies applied live in the session
  • How to present findings confidently to decision-makers

Why This Matters — More Than You Think

I often get asked: "Why does a B.Com student need data analytics?" My answer is always the same — because the world has changed, and commerce has changed with it. Today's businesses don't just want graduates who can read a balance sheet. They want people who can look at a pile of numbers and tell them what it means, what to do next, and why it matters.

A well-crafted report, backed by solid data analysis, can influence a business decision worth crores. It can open a door that no certificate alone can open. That is the real-world value we were trying to give our students on this day — not just a skill, but a superpower.

"Data is not just numbers on a spreadsheet. It is a story waiting to be told — and the ones who can tell it well will always have a seat at the table."

The Stars I Did Not Expect

I must speak about the student coordinators — because honestly, they deserve their own blog post. The seamless flow of the entire day, the arrangements, the energy management, the on-ground problem-solving — none of it would have happened without these eight remarkable young people:

Vansh Mehrotra Siddhi Agarwal Roli Gupta Dharni Gupta Sonali Upadhayay Khushmanpreet Kaur Sahil Tiwari Shivanshu Shukla

What struck me most about them was not just their efficiency — it was their ownership. They weren't just executing tasks; they genuinely cared about how the day turned out. That level of initiative and responsibility is precisely the kind of quality that will take them far beyond any classroom.

Gratitude I Must Express

None of this would have been possible without the unwavering support of our Head of Department, Dr. Dheeraj Gandhi, whose vision and guidance shaped the very soul of this workshop. His belief that commerce education must evolve with the times is what gave us the freedom — and the encouragement — to design something truly different.

I am also deeply grateful to our university leadership — Dr. Umesh Gautam, Mr. Parth Gautam, Prof. Y.D.S. Arya, and Prof. Manish Gupta — for consistently creating an environment where faculty are encouraged to innovate and students are given every opportunity to grow.

As I drove home that evening, I thought about a student who came up to me after the session ended. She said, "Sir, I never thought data could be this interesting." That one sentence made the entire day worth it.

That is the thing about teaching — you don't always know the impact you are having in the moment. But sometimes, just sometimes, you get a glimpse. And on March 16th, 2026, I got more than a glimpse.

I got to watch young minds discover their potential. And there is nothing — absolutely nothing — more rewarding than that.
